Called a “delightful sexpot” and ‘”burlesque royalty” by the LA Weekly, PENNY STARR, JR. is the “Pe-Tite Barnum of Burlesque”.
After spending 3 years making the documentary THE VELVET HAMMER BURLESQUE, it was no wonder that she decided to pick up the mantle held by her grandmother, Philadelphia burlesque dancer Penny Starr.
Or, as Penny Starr Jr. puts it, “You can only live with the circus for so long before you want to join!”
Making her debut at the legendary Miss Exotic World Burlesque Competition, PS Jr. ended her debut burlesque number by jumping in the pool that was the center of the outdoor performance space, giving new meaning to the word “breast stroke”. In 2004, on her first anniversary of performing, Penny Starr, Jr. became First Runner-Up at the annual Burlesque Hall of Fame competition (formerly Exotic World).
Penny Starr, Jr. continues to pop up all over the country, and dare I say, Canada. She was a recurring dancer at Margaret Cho’s The Sensuous Woman in Los Angeles. She has made guest appearances in shows like, Lucha Va Voom, Skin Tight Outta Sight Rebel Burlesque in Toronto, the Slipper Room in NYC and the Peek-A-Boo Revue in Philadelphia, Viva-Va-Voom Brrrlesque in Alaska, The Burlypics and The Southern Fried Burlesque Fests as well as Tease-O-Rama and the Burlesque Hall of Fame. She has been featured in the book IT’S ALL THAT GLITTERS, the burlesque edition of STYLE MONTE CARLO, has been a centerfold for BARRACUDA MAGAZINE and currently writes the Burlesque is My Business for BACHELOR PAD MAGAZINE. She has consulted on such shows as CHUCK (including a cameo as a bachelor party stripper), CASTLE (burlesque wardrobe consultant) and has taught tassel twirling for WATER FOR ELEPHANTS.
She and Penny, Sr. perform the first and only grandmother/granddaughter striptease act.
She was the producer and creative director of VICTORY VARIETY HOUR (voted “Best Badass Burlesque” by Los Angeles Magazine 2012) and in the past, she has co-produced JESUS CHRIST’S HOLIDAY BURLESQUE REVUE, the pioneering nerdlesque show SUPERNOVA A-GO-GO during the San Diego Int’l Comic Book Convention, the film and burlesque event THE DD DOUBLE FEATURE (in Park City, Austin, Memphis, New Orleans and Los Angeles) and the irregularly scheduled 1920’s club CLUB SCHMUTZIG, and the speakeasy UNMENTIONABLES.
Penny Starr, Jr. also is a costume designer and seamstress. With 20+ years in Motion Picture Local 705, Penny (aka Augusta Avallone) has worked on films and TV shows like Chuck, Numbers, Bones and Disney’s Jessie. She has created burlesque costumes for many LA burlesque dancers, and worked on costumes for Kayne West’s 808 and Heartbreak Hollywood Bowl show, Ozzy Osbourne’s final tour and Juliette Lewis’ recent tour with the Hot Licks. She has assisted costume designer Sharon McGunigle with the Troubador Theater Troupe. She has a love of disco fashions, vintage lingerie and arcane hand sewing techniques. If a costume needs to defy the laws of physics, she is the person to call.
